What does rescue mean?

Genuine rescue takes many forms.

Birds come into rescue for many reasons, often through no fault of their own or their previous family.

• Found lost or abandoned
• Surrendered after an owner’s circumstances change
• Left without care following illness, relocation or bereavement
• Neglected or kept in unsuitable conditions
• Taken to a veterinary clinic with nobody able to claim them
• Surrendered because an owner can no longer meet their needs

Rescues should work together.

There are many genuine rescues operating in different areas. We believe rescues should communicate, cooperate and support one another whenever possible.

When a bird is found, its location and immediate needs should be considered. A suitable rescue close to where the bird was found may be able to respond sooner, reducing unnecessary travel and stress. Nearby rescues should not be overlooked simply because another organisation is better known or located elsewhere.

Working together allows rescues to share information, refer cases appropriately and find the safest and most practical option. The priority should always be the bird—not competition, recognition or ownership of a rescue case.

We assess need, not price.

Budgie Sanctuary Rescue does not discriminate based on a bird’s species, appearance or monetary value. A commonly kept budgie deserves the same compassion and consideration as a bird regarded as rare or expensive.

We consider each bird’s individual needs and whether we have the appropriate space, facilities, knowledge and resources for that species. Our primary focus is our local area, but we often assist with birds and enquiries from farther away when we are able. When we cannot help directly, we try to provide guidance or suggest another suitable rescue or option.
